5 days machu picchu tour itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Cusco and City Tour

Upon your arrival at the Cusco airport our team will be waiting to welcome you. Then we will drive you in our private van over to your hotel in the Historic Center of Cusco. At your hotel there will be natural teas available free of charge. Teas like muña and coca are delicious and help to counteract the effects of the elevation.

At 1 pm, you can begin your City Tour. It starts out at the iconic Cusco Cathedral. This church contains over 400 paintings from the Cusco School of Fine Arts. Next you will go see the Coricancha, the Incan Temple of the Sun. Back in the day the walls of this temple were covered with gold. This was the most important religious site in their Empire (Tahuantinsuyo).

Next we will head out of the city and up to the immense Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. It is built of gigantic blocks of cut stone. Some of the blocks weigh more than 100 tons. This is an amazing site.

Then we will go to the mysterious Incan site of Qenco. This carved limestone formation is full of subterranean passages and decorated with mythical figures. In addition we will visit the Bath of the Incas, Tambo Machay. There you can find venders of arts and crafts. You will have the opportunity to buy sweaters made of the wool of baby alpacas. There will also be ceramics, silver jewelry, and handmade goods fabricated by the local folks. This is a great chance to buy some inexpensive souvenirs for your family and for your loved ones at home. The tour lasts between 4 and a half and 5 hours.

Day 2:Tour from Cusco to Moray and Salineras

If you are one of those travelers who loves to explore and to experience unique adventures, then you´ll love this day´s adventure. On this second day of our Peru Tour Machu Picchu we´ll leave Cusco and travel to the important Incan agricultural center of Moray. There we can observe the great skill that the Incas exibiited through their farming techniques and by how they adapted plants to different climatic zones. You will see great circular terraces where the temperature changes depending on the elevation. The Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates. Next, we will go visit the traditional town of Maras. There we will make a short stop to see the pretty houses which feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times.

We will continue on to the salt mines of Salineras, This is an impressive site that consists of over 5000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. The Incas mined salt at this site. The local people let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. Then the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind a crust of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market. At approximately at 2 pm. we will return to the city of Cusco.

Day 3:Tour of the Sacred Valley and Connection to the Town of Aguas Calientes

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we will begin our tour of the fascinating Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our expert local guide will keep us company as we enjoy our day full of unique and unforgettable experiences. Next on our progression are the Pisaq Archeological Park and the towns of Pisaq, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. Along the way we will be able to enjoy the best of Cusco’s cuisine at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

During our journey we will visit Awanacancha which is an exhibit center for South American camelids and Andean weavings. Awanacancha is a living museum that is dedicated to maintaining the traditional methods and age old techniques of Andean weaving, and of rearing South American camelids. (We only stop at Awanacancha on private service tours). Next we will visit Pisaq. After our visit to Pisaq, we will head down the Valley to Urubamba. This is where we will enjoy our delicious lunch at one of the premier restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

When lunch is finished we will continue on to Ollantaytambo. Here we can pass a peaceful afternoon at the great Incan fortress which was built during the Imperial Period. After touring the fortress, our guide will immediately take us over to Ollantaytambo train station. There we will catch our train to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). When we arrive there, our team will lead us over to our hotel where we can rest up after an adventure packed day.

Today is a very special day on our journey. Today we visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. Therefore, we will wake up very early, eat breakfast, and ride the bus up to the Incan Citadel of Machu Picchu. Upon arriving you will be given a 3 hour private guided tour and visit the most important places in the complex. First you will visit the House of the Guardian. We just loved this tour. There is so much to see, and so many interesting places to visit in Cusco. I thought that the Moray site won the prize for the most interesting ruin. It showed how the Incas paid such close attention to every detail. It seems like they were perfectionists.

All of the Sacred Valley is quite spectacular. I would love to live in a place like Pisaq with my family. All the people were friendly and lovely.
