Day 4:Tour of Moray, Salineras and Ollantaytambo

We´ll leave Cusco in the morning and travel to the most important agricultural center of the Inca Empire, Moray. There you can observe the great skill that the Incas exibiited through their farming techniques and by how they adapted plants to different climatic zones. You will see great circular terraces where the temperature changed depending on the altitude. As you descend the terraces, the temperature increases. The Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates.

Our next stop will be Maras. There we will make a short stop to see the pretty houses which feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times. The town of Maras used to be inhabited by Incan nobles who originally lived in Cusco. Today the lintel of each house shows the coat-of-arms of the family. This indicates how important this town was during the time of the Spanish Conquest.

We will continue on to the salt mines of Salineras, This is an impressive site that consists of over 3000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. The Incas mined salt at this site, and this practice continued throughout the reign of the Spanish viceroys. The local people let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. Then the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind a crust of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market. We will finish up our tour by stopping in Urubamba for a good buffet lunch. After lunch we will go to Ollantaytambo train station and catch the vistadome train to Aguas Calientes.

You might as well take advantage of the opportunity to snap some amazing photos. After a brief explanation from your guide, you’ll continue on to imposing Temple of the Sun. the Temple of the High Priest, the Sacred Plaza, and the Great Carved Rock that has intricate markings and was probably used as a Sun dial by the Incas of old.

After marveling at this 15th century feat of engineering, you will return to Aguas Calientes and have lunch. Later in the afternoon you will board the train back to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. In Ollantaytambo you will hop on our private van and ride back to the city of Cusco.

Day 6:City Tour of Cusco, Half Day Tour

The Cusco city tour begins at the iconic Cusco Cathedral. This old church contains over 400 paintings from the Cusco School of Fine Arts.

After touring the Cathedral you will visit the Incan Temple of the Sun, the Coricancha. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the walls of the Temple were covered with gold. The stonework here is absolutely amazing. How did the Incas build this? The walls were covered with sheets of pure gold that was 3 meters high. During Incan times this was the most important religious site in their empire (Tahuantinsuyo)

Next we will head out of the city and up to the immense Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. This impressive fortress is located north of the city of Cusco. It is built of gigantic cut blocks of stone. Some of the blocks weigh more than 100 tons. This is an excellent example of Incan military architecture. The fortress took more than 70 years to complete. These fabulous walls amaze everyone who comes here to contemplate them.

Then we will go to the mysterious Incan site of Qenco. This carved limestone formation is full of subterranean passages and decorated with mythical figures. In addition we will visit the Baths of the Incas, Tambo Machay. There you can find venders of arts and crafts. You will have the opportunity to buy sweaters made of the wool of baby alpacas. There will also be ceramics, silver jewelry, and handmade goods fabricated by the local folks.

The whole city tour lasts about 5 hours.

Day 7:Route of the Sun Tour from Cusco to Puno

In the morning, after eating a delicious breakfast, we leave Cusco and ride through the Andes in the direction of the Antiplano. The first stop on the tourist Route of the Sun will be the chapel at Andahuaylillas. There we will have a very interesting guided tour of the church of St. Peter, the Apostle. The ceilings and the walls are covered with murals and the oil paintings which use real golden foil.

The next tour stop will be the Temple of Wiracocha at Raqchi. This is an important Incan site. The large rectangular temple is 92 m. long, 25.5 m. wide, and about 9.8 m high. During your tour of the site you can not only learn all about this fantastic tourist attraction, but you can also enjoy the changing weather in this pleasant Andean environment.

When we arrive at Sicuani we will eat a great lunch. Then we will continue our journey along the Route of the Sun and stop at La Raya. At 4335 masl., this is the highest point of our trip from Cusco to Puno. The final stop on the tour will be the museum at Pukara. This was an important ceremonial site on the Altiplano. Here we can discover the origin of pre-Incan cultures through the museum’s collection of sculptures and ceramics. We will arrive at Puno at approximately 5 pm. There we will be able to get comfortable and relax at our hotel.

Day 8:Lake Titicaca Tour: The Floating Islands of the Uros, Taquile and Luquina

On this our 8th day we will go out boat riding on Lake Titicaca. We’ll visit the Floating Islands of the Uros and the Island of Taquile. The trip out to the Floating Islands is really fascinating. The natives make the floatings islands out of the totora reeds which grow in the shallow parts of the lake. Out of these reeds they can produce just about everything that they need to live comfortably out in the middle of the lake.

In the morning we will head over to the port, board our motor launch, and ride out to the Island of Taquile. We will enjoy a 2 and a half hour tour of this island which has been ranked the 4th most beautiful island in the world. Here we will visit the isolated weavers of this ancient community.

We are going to return along the traditional route. We will leave Taquile at around noon and head in the direction of the Chucuito Peninsula. This is the Aymara region of the Lake and represents the communal identity of the Peruvian – Bolivian Altiplano. We will eat a wonderful buffet lunch in the community of Luquina Chico.

Later in the afternoon we will visit the Floating Islands of the Uros on our way back to Puno. Here the natives maintain their ancient customs and way of life by weaving together totora reeds (which grow in the shallows of the Lake) to construct their floating island home.

This program allows our clients to visit new tourist attractions which very few vistors know about. Since this is a non-traditional tour, our clients are very satisfied. In this way you can get a good sense of the daily life of the people in rural Peru.

Day 9:Sillustani Tour. Flight from Juliaca to Lima: Your journey back home or on to your next destination

According to your airplane ticket, our team will drive you to Juliaca’s Manco Capac Airport in time for you check in and catch your flight to Lima; and then to connect with your country.
