Manu Expeditions Itinerary

Day 1:Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud forest – Pilcopata

On this first day of our adventure we embark upon one of the most fascinating tours that Peru has to offer. We will leave the narrow, pre-Columbian streets of Cusco very early in the morning. In our private van we will head out of town towards our first destination, Pilcopata. Our ride will take us through fertile inter-Andean valleys and by picturesque native communities. We will stop along the way to visit the pre-Incan site of Ninamarca. This spot is known as the Chullpas of Ninamarca. We will also visit the typical colonial town of Paucartambo. This is an important location which is famous for its colonial architecture and its festival dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen.

From Paucartambo we will ascend up to the Pass of Acjanacu which is at an elevation of 3850 masl. Next we will go down to cloud forest of the high jungle. This is a zone full of exotic wildlife. Endemic to the area are the spectacled bear, the Cock of the Rock, bromeliads, orchids, and ferns. We will eat our lunch here and observe the local flora and fauna. Then we will continue on to our first night´s stop at Pilcopata. We can have supper and relax among the verdant vegetation.

Day 2:Pilcopata – Atalaya – Albergue

On day 2 of your Manu Jungle trip, we will wake up very early so we can take a short walk to where we will see the dance of the national bird of Peru, the Cock of the Rock. This bird´s plumage is an intense reddish orange. In order to see this shy, endemic bird, we will have to hide behind a blind on a camouflaged platform in a tree in the forest.

After having feasted our eyes on the intense hues of the Cock of the Rock, we will return to our hotel for a great breakfast, and then we will continue our journey into the heart of Manu. The trip from Pilcopata to Atalaya will be along a narrow trail that is covered with the flora of the area. When we arrive at this magical and beautiful place, which is located on the banks of the Upper Madre de Dios River at 700 masl., we will eat a delicious lunch. Following our lunch, we will head out onto the river where you can take some fantastic photos of the immense variety of birds. You´ll see herons, buzzards, cormorants, and many others. Before sunset we can explore the jungle around the lodge. Finally we will have a very nice supper, and get a good night´s sleep.

Day 3:Lodge – Salt lick of the Parrots – Machu Cochahuasi

We will eat breakfast at our lodge. Then our local guide will explain all about all the good things you can witness at Manu Peru. He will tell us about the different habitats that are to be found at different elevations, and about the great variety of wildlife all around us. We will hike a bit farther into the jungle in order to better see the flora and the fauna of the zone. We can also talk with some folks who live in the area. They can explain to us the qualities of some of the medicinal plants.

When we get back to our lodge we will eat lunch. Then we will take a boat across the river and hike for about 30 minutes. We will check out the native plants like Heliconia. When we reach Machuwasi Lagoon, we can get comfortable and watch the wildlife. You can see toucans, royal herons, cardinals, crested carpenter birds, etc. It will be an action packed day. When we return to the lodge, you´ll have supper. You can have an intercultural exchange with our team members before you go to sleep.

Canopy tour (optional): If you like adventure sports, you could get together with other adventure sports enthusiasts and have a fun adventure up in the canopy of the forest. You would glide through the top of the forest on a network of cables, going from platform to platform, and from tree to tree. The site where you ride through the canopy is close to the Lodge. It will give you a whole different perspective on the jungle.

Day 4:Lodge– Playa – Upper Madre de Dios River – Pilcopata – Cusco

On this the last day of our tour, we will wake up very early in the morning. We will take the ten minute walk over to the salt lick. This special spot is located in the heart of the jungle. At this salt lick the birds eat clay that is full of minerals that helps keep their digestion perfect. You will be able to see all different kinds of parrots here. The blue-headed parrot and the white-eyed parrot are examples of the exotic species that are often found at the Colpa. After checking out all of the birds, we will return to the lodge and eat breakfast.

Then we will bid farewell to our hosts and board our boat for the ride back to the port of Atalaya. There will be some free time after lunch to take photos. Next we will get on our bus and head back to Cusco. We will arrive in Cusco that night.

The amazing quantity of life that Manu contains is mind-blowing. It is easy to believe that there are thousands of species yet undiscovered by man in the heart of the Amazon. A great time!
