Our Choquequirao tour will lead you to the ruins of two absolutely majestic Incan cities. On our Choquequirao Trail Peru you will travel through the eyebrow of the jungle in the department of Cusco. If you want to get away from the noise of the city and experience an adrenaline filled adventure, accompany us on one of the most impressive trekking routes in all of South America.
This Choquequirao hike is perfect if you are looking for a fun challenging adventure. You can explore the hidden city of Choquequirao which is even bigger than Machu Picchu. Because it is difficult to reach, relatively few travelers take the Choquequirao trail. For this reason you will feel like you are among the first people to reach to this magical place. On our Choquequirao tour 5 days you will see close up the ancient architecture, the giant forests, and the cascading waterfalls which flow down the flanks of snow-capped Mt. Salkantay. Choquequirao is known as the cradle of gold and it is the sister city of Machu Picchu. Its architecture and structure is similar to Machu Picchu.
It is also known as the Lost City of the Incas. It was here at Choquequirao Peru that the last Incas of Vilcabamba found refuge. As you hike along this Choquequirao tours route you will be amazed by the variety of the flora and the fauna. Finally, the fantastic views of the Apurimac River and the beautiful Vilcabamba Mtn. Range will blow your mind.

On the first day of our Choquequirao tour, we will pick you up at your hotel at 4 am. We will drive you in our private vehicle to Capiliyoc in the district of San Pedro de Cachora. This is where we will begin our hike along the Choquequirao trail. We will stop for breakfast and to check out some of the fantastic views. When we arrive at Capiliyoc we will be able to see the maginficent peaks of the Vilcanota Range.
Next we will meet the guides, cooks, muleskinners, and assistants that make up our team. Together we will begin hiking toward our first campsite at Santa Rosa. In Chiquiska we will have our first lunch, next we will continue down to the Apurimac River while we are there we will pause to appreciate this fantastic view of the Apurimac River and the Apurimac Canyon. The amount of biodiversity in the this area is amazing. After that walk uphill to Santa Rosa then it will be time to relax. In the evening our chef will prepare a wonderful dinner. After dinner you can get together with the folks on our team and have an intercultural exchange.
In the morning our team will serve you a delicious hot drink followed by a hearty breakfast. Then we will head out toward our destination Choquequirao. As we hike up to Marampata we will be traveling through the forested vegetation of this zone. When we reach Marampata we will be able to see the enigmatic mountains of Cusco and Apurimac, and, off in the distance, we’ll see Choquequirao. We can take a break at Marampata, and have a snack before starting on the next leg of our journey.
When we arrive at our campsite on the outskirts of Choquequirao, we can relax and have a leisurely lunch. The afternoon will be free time. You can stay in camp and take it easy, or amble around and photograph the local flora and fauna. A wonderful dinner will be served at dusk.
This is a very special day in the mountains. You will have the whole day to enjoy one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in South America. Right after breakfast we will start exploring the best that Choquequirao has to offer. The flora and fauna are spectacular here. We will travel along old narrow trails until we arrive at the site. First you will see the terraces, the colcas, the fountains, and the waterfalls. There are lots of cliffs in the immediate area. Consequently, the Incas had to be very careful in choosing the sites where they would build their temples, plazas, and astronomical observatories.
Next we will return to our campsite for lunch, and then continue our tour by visiting places that are seldom visited. On the second part of our tour we will go to the sector of the llamas, the main Uhsño, and the sacred plaza. Finally, we will go down into the great plaza where we can rest and contemplate the sun as it sets over the mountains here in the heart of the Andes. Finally we will return to our campsite for supper and a good night´s rest.
This will be another adventure-filled day in the life of you folks who are exploring the foothills of the great Vilcabamba Range. In order to get the very best photos of Choquequirao and of the Andes Mountains, you could go over to the main plaza and shoot a photo session there at dawn. After breakfast at camp, we will get ready for our return journey. You will be able learn about and appreciate the customs of the local people at Marampata. We will eat lunch at Sta. Rosa.
If the weather and the local inhabitants permit, we can eat some of the fruit from their orchards. You can try out the sugar cane from which the locals extract the juice to make cañazo, which is a Peruvian arguardiente made from sugar cane. It is 98 proof. We will finish up lunch and then hike down to Playa Rosalinas which is the beach on the river. There we can take a break before beginning the hike up to Chiquisca on the other side of the canyon. Before 6 pm we should arrive at our camp where we will have a farewell supper and say good-bye to our team members. They will be departing for Cachora before dawn on Day 5.
(You can coordinate the details of your visit to the main plaza on this day directly with your guide.)
Breakfast will be served early in the morning. Therefore we will be able to get an early start on our return hike to Capuliyuq. The climb from Chikiska to Capuliyuq is the most physically challenging part of the whole trek. So it will be best for us to get an early start. Upon arrival at Capuliyuq you will be given back all the equipment that the porters have carried for you.
After a short break we will board our bus and ride to the Stone at Saywite. This is part of the Saywite Archeological Site that is located in the district of Curahuasi, province of Abancay, in the department of Apurímac. The site covers about 60 Hectares. Saywite is geographically close to the great sites of Machu Picchu and Choquequirao. After touring the site, we will eat our farewell lunch. It will include Novo Andino cuisine and a free Pisco Sour on the edge of the site. Before returning to Cusco, we will stop by the hot springs at Cconoc. These springs are located in a pretty spot on the banks of the Apurimac River surrounded by algarroba trees, reed, and cactus. The waters are odorless and slightly salty. We should be arriving back in Cusco about 9 pm.
This is a great journey of discovery. I enjoyed it more than Machu Picchu. Our team was the best, very helpful and patient.
