Best Machu Picchu Travel Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Cusco and City Tour

Upon your arrival at the Cusco airport our team will be waiting for you. We will be happy to welcome you and assist you in picking up your luggage. Then we will drive you in our private van over to your hotel in the Historic Center of Cusco. At your hotel there will be natural teas available free of charge. Teas like muña and coca are delicious and help to counteract the effects of altitude. They also help the body to acclimatize to the high elevation of Cusco.

After midday you will take the City tour. This tour begins at the Plaza de Armas of Cusco in the iconic Cathedral. Next we will visit the Incan Temple of the Sun, the Coricancha. During Incan times this was the most important religious site in their empire (Tahuantinsuyo.) In addition we will head out of the city and up to the immense Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. It is built of gigantic blocks of cut stones. These fabulous walls amaze everyone who comes here.

Then we will go to the mysterious Incan site of Qenco. This carved limestone formation is full of subterranean passages and decorated with mythical figures. Finally we will visit the Bath of the Incas, Tambo Machay and Puca Pucara. The tour lasts for about 5 hours. At the end of the City Tour, you will return to your hotel in Cusco.

Day 2:Tour of the Sacred Valley and Connection to the Town of Aguas Calientes

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we will begin our tour of the fascinating Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our expert local guide will keep us company as we enjoy our day full of unique and unforgettable experiences. Next on our progression are the Pisaq Archeological Park and the towns of Pisaq, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. Along the way we will be able to enjoy the best of Cusco’s cuisine at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

During our journey we will visit Awanacancha which is an exhibit center for South American camelids and Andean weavings. Awanacancha is a living museum that is dedicated to maintaining the traditional methods and age old techniques of Andean weaving, and of rearing South American camelids. (We only stop at Awanacancha on private service tours). Next we will visit the world famous Pisaq craffs market in the center of town. Soon after we will go up the hill to the Pisaq Archeological Center. After our visit to Pisaq, we will head down the Valley to Urubamba. This is where we will enjoy our delicious lunch at one of the premier restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

When lunch is finished we will continue on to Ollantaytambo. Here we can pass a peaceful afternoon at the great Incan fortress which was built during the Imperial Period. After touring the fortress, our guide will immediately take us over to Ollantaytambo train station. There we will catch our train to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). When we arrive there, our team will lead us over to our hotel where we can rest up after an adventure packed day.

Day 3:Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu - Sacred Valley - Cusco

Today is a very special day on our Peruvian journey. On this day we visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. Therefore we will wake up very early and eat breakfast at our hotel. Next we will board the bus in Aguas Calientes. We will ride up the hill for 25 minutes until we reach the archeological site.

Once you arrive at Machu Picchu, you will be given a 3 hour guided tour. You will visit the most important places in the complex. You will visit the House of the Guardian. From there you can see Machu Picchu in all its splendor. You’ll continue on with your Machu Picchu Travel adventure to the imposing Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the High Priest, the Sacred Plaza, and the Ushnu.
After a wonderful visit to Machu Pïcchu, you will go back down to Machu Picchu Pueblo for a great lunch. Then you will board your train to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo you will hop in our private van and be driven back to your hotel in Cusco. There you can enjoy your well-deserved rest after an emotion filled day.

During your tour of Machu Picchu you will have the option of climbing up Huayna Picchu Mtn. or Machu Picchu Mtn. If you wish to climb up either one, it would be in your best interest to reserve your tickets at least 3 months in advance. We will bid you farewell as you begin your next adventure, hoping that you carry with you fond memories of fulfilled dreams and, above all, positive energy so you will be able to continue exploring the best that our world has to offer.

There is no place in this world quite like Machu Picchu. This was certainly the high point of our tour. But I have to say that the Incan sites closer to Cusco and in the Sacred Valley of the Incas were also stunning. Like Saqsayhuaman, it is amazing that those gigantic rocks could be so perfectly put together. The folks at Travel 1 were very helpful, and the service was top flight.
