Machu Picchu Vacation itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Lima and hotel check-in

When you arrive in Lima your Travel 1 host will welcome you and escort you to the nearby Wyndham Costa Del Sol Hotel in the Lima airport. Because most international flights arrive quite late and flights to Cusco depart early the following morning, staying at the airport hotel will allow you to maximize your sleep and begin your vacation feeling well-rested.

Day 2:Arrival in Cusco (Optional Cusco City Tour)

On your second day in Peru our team will escort you to the check-in counter at the airport for your morning flight to Cusco. You will fly over the mountains to the heart of the andes, Cusco.

When you arrive in Cusco our team will meet you at the airport and drive you in our private van over to your hotel in the Historic Center of Cusco. At your hotel there will be natural teas available free of charge. Teas like muña and coca are delicious and also help you to acclimate to the high altitude.

Optional tour;

In the afternoon at 1:30 pm, your City Tour begins in the Plaza de Armas of Cusco. First you will visit the iconic Cusco Cathedral. The church contains over 400 paintings from the Cusco School of Fine Arts. Next you will visit the Incan Temple of the Sun, the Qoricancha (the Santo Domingo Church and Convent). All the walls of this temple were covered with sheets of pure gold. During Incan times this was the most important religious site in the whole Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo).

Next, we will leave the city and go up to the immense Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. This popular site was built of gigantic blocks of cut stone. Some of the blocks weigh more than 100 tons. This is one of the ancient world’s most amazing constructions. Visiting the historical site of Qenco will be your next activity. Discover here a carved limestone formation which is full of subterranean passages and decorated with mythical figures. Finally, you will go exploring the Bath of the Incas, Tambo Machay. Here you can find venders of popular arts and crafts for sale. Your entire adventure lasts 6 hours.

Day 3:Tours from Cusco to Moray and Salineras. (Half Day Tour)

We’ll leave Cusco in the morning and travel to the important Incan agricultural center of Moray. Here you will see the great circular terraces where the temperature changed depending on the elevation. It is thought by historians that the Incas studied climatic conditions and soil properties here. They learned how to grow and adapt different kinds of food crops that originally grew in different regions of their empire. As you descend the terraces the temperature increases. The Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates. You will probably see farmers and shepherds in the countryside surrounding this Incan marvel.

Next, you will go visit the traditional town of Maras. There you will make a short stop to see the pretty houses which feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times. Town of Maras used to be inhabited by Incan nobility that originally lived in Cusco. They were on their way to Ollantaytambo when they settled in Maras. Today the lintel of each house shows the coat-of-arms of each family.

Finally, you will visit the salt mines of Salineras, This is an excellent site that consists of over 5000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. The Incas mined salt at this site, and salt mining continued here throughout the reign of the Spanish viceroys. Local people today let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. Then the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind a crust of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market.

Day 4:Sacred Valley Day Tour from Cusco and Connection for Overnight Trip to Machu Picchu

Starting in Cusco in the morning after a delicious breakfast, you will begin your tour of the fascinating Sacred Valley of the Incas. Your expert local guide will accompany you on your incredible adventure through the Bread Basket of the Empire. Along the way you will be able to enjoy the best of Cusco’s cuisine at one of the most exclusive restaurants in Urubamba.

During your journey you will visit Awanacancha which is an exhibit center for South American camelids and Andean weavers. Awanacancha is a living museum that is dedicated to maintaining the traditional methods and the age old techniques of Andean weaving, and the rearing of South American camelids (We only stop at Awanacancha on private service tours). Next you will visit the Pisaq Archeological Park and the famous crafts market of Pisaq in the town below. After your visit to Pisaq you will head down the Valley to Urubamba. This is where you will enjoy your delicious lunch at one of the premier restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

When lunch is finished you will continue on to the Ollantaytambo Archeological Site. Here you can go exploring at the great Incan fortress which was built during the Imperial Period in the Reign of Pachacuteq. After touring the fortress, your local guide will immediately take you over to the Ollantaytambo train station. There you will catch your train to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). When you arrive there, our team will lead you over to your hotel where you can rest up after an incredible adventure packed day.

Day 5:Guided tour of Machu Picchu and return to Cusco

Today is a very special day on your journey to Cusco, Peru. Today you will visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. Therefore, you will wake up early and eat breakfast. Just after breakfast you will ride the bus up to the Incan Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Upon arriving you will be given a 3 hour private guided tour and visit the most important places in the historical complex. First you will visit the House of the Guardian. From there you can see Machu Picchu in all its glory. You might as well take advantage of this opportunity to snap some amazing photos. You’ll continue on to the mystical Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the High Priest, the Sacred Plaza and the Ushnu. The splendor of Mother Nature surrounding Machu Picchu is very, very beautiful.

After your tour you will have free time to explore and take photos. These photos and videos are sure to be treasured when you return home. Later in the afternoon you will have lunch at Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel by Inkcaterra in Aguas Calientes. When lunch is over, you will board your train back to Ollantaytambo. There you will hop in our private van and be driven back to your hotel in Cusco. Finally, you can enjoy your well-deserved rest after your excellent adventure.

During your tour of Machu Picchu you will have the option of climbing up Huayna Picchu Mtn. or Machu Picchu Mtn. If you wish to climb up either one, please let us know at least 3 or 4 months in advance during the high season.

Day 6:Cusco - Lima (Your journey back home or on to your next destination)

Our team will drive you to Cusco’s Velasco Astete Airport in time for you to check in and catch your flight to Lima. We hope that you will carry with you fond memories of fulfilled dreams and, above all, positive energy so you will be able to continue to explore the best that our world has to offer.

Note. If you are not yet ready to return home, our team can help you extend your stay in this magical Land of the Incas. There are lots more tourist destinations that you can visit in Peru, such as the Nazca Lines, Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, the tour of northern Peru, or the traveller could go up the wondrous Amazon River in Iquitos.

I would have to admit that this has been one of my favorite tours, and I have taken tours all over the globe. Everyday was interesting and educational. What the Incas accomplished was marvelous, but I also really got a kick out of modern day Peruvians. They are able to cope with any eventuallity in good spirits and with a smile, usually a big smile, on their faces. I will be back again to delve more deeply into this wonderful place.

There is really no place in the world like Machu Picchu. It is truly other-worldly, but I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the Cusco area. The weather was great. The people were friendly. It is one of those places where we really felt appreciated as a tourists. The folks from Travel 1 were well informed, fun to be with, and very well organized. I would recommend this tour.
