Machu Picchu Vacation Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Cusco and City Tour

Upon your arrival at the Cusco airport, our team will be waiting to welcome you and drive you over to your hotel. At your hotel there will be natural teas available free of charge. Teas like muña and coca are delicious and help to counteract the effects of the high altitude.

In the afternoon at 1:30pm, your City Tour begins. First you will visit the iconic Cusco Cathedral. This church contains over 400 paintings from the Cusco School of Fine Arts. Next you will go see the Incan Temple of the Sun, the Coricancha. The walls of this temple were covered with sheets of pure gold. During Incan times this was the most important religious site in all their empire (Tahuantinsuyo).

Next we will head out of the city and up to the immense Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. It is built of gigantic blocks of cut stone. Some of the blocks weigh more than 100 tons. These fabulous walls are really amazing. Then we will go to the mysterious Incan site of Qenco. This carved limestone formation is full of subterranean passages and decorated with mythical figures. In addition we will visit the Bath of the Incas, Tambo Machay. There you can find venders of arts and crafts. The entire tour of the city takes between 4 and a half to 5 hours.

Day 2:Cusco, Tours to Moray and Salineras

We´ll leave Cusco in the morning and travel to the important Incan agricultural center of Moray. Here you will see great circular terraces where the temperature changed depending on the elevation. It is thought by historians that the Incas studied climatic conditions and soil properties here. They learned how to grow and adapt different kinds of food crops that originally grew in different regions of their empire. As you descend the terraces, the temperature increases. The Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates. You can see farmers and shepherds surrounding this Incan marvel.

Next, we will go visit the traditional town of Maras. There we will make a short stop to see the pretty houses which feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times. The town of Maras used to be inhabited by Incan nobles who originally lived in Cusco. They were on their way to Ollantaytambo when they settled in Maras. Today the lintel of each house shows the coat-of-arms of each family.

Finally we will visit the salt mines of Salineras, This is an impressive site that consists of over 5000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. The Incas mined salt at this site, and this practice continued throughout the reign of the Spanish viceroys. The local people today let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. Then the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind a crust of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market.

Day 3:Tour of the Sacred Valley and Connection to the Town of Aguas Calientes

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we will begin our tour of the fascinating Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our expert local guide will keep us company as we enjoy our day full of unique and unforgettable experiences. Next on our progression are the Pisaq Archeological Park and the towns of Pisaq, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. Along the way we will be able to enjoy the best of Cusco’s cuisine at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

During our journey we will visit Awanacancha which is an exhibit center for South American camelids and Andean weavings. Awanacancha is a living museum that is dedicated to maintaining the traditional methods and age old techniques of Andean weaving, and of rearing South American camelids. (We only stop at Awanacancha on private service tours). Next we will visit Pisaq. After our visit to Pisaq, we will head down the Valley to Urubamba. This is where we will enjoy our delicious lunch at one of the premier restaurants in the Sacred Valley.

When lunch is finished we will continue on to Ollantaytambo. Here we can pass a peaceful afternoon at the great Incan fortress which was built during the Imperial Period. After touring the fortress, our guide will immediately take us over to Ollantaytambo train station. There we will catch our train to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). When we arrive there, our team will lead us over to our hotel where we can rest up after an adventure packed day.

Day 4:Guided tour of Machu Picchu and return to Cusco

Today is a very special day on our journey. Today we visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu. Therefore, we will wake up very early, eat breakfast, and ride the bus up to the Incan Citadel of Machu Picchu. Upon arriving you will be given a 3 hour private guided tour and visit the most important places in the complex. First you will visit the House of the Guardian. From there you can see Machu Picchu in all its splendor. You might as well take advantage of the opportunity to snap some amazing photos. you’ll continue on to imposing Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the High Priest, the Sacred Plaza and the Ushnu.

After your tour you will have free time to explore and take photos. These photos and videos are sure to be treasured when you return home. Later in the afternoon you will have lunch and you will board the train back to Ollantaytambo. There you will hop on our bus and be driven back to your hotel in Cusco. Finally you can enjoy your well-deserved rest after an emotion filled day.

During your tour of Machu Picchu you will have the option of climbing up Huayna Picchu Mtn. or Machu Picchu Mtn. If you wish to climb up either one, please let us know at least 3 months in advance.

Day 5:South Valley Tour from Cusco

Following a delicious breakfast in the morning, we will begin our tour of the Valley south of the City of Cusco. This tour of Tipon, Piquillaqta, and Andahuaylillas takes in some of the most beautiful places in the Cusco area. You will see Peru’s legacy from pre-Incan, Incan, and colonial points of view.

First we begin by visiting the traditional San Pedro market. In San Pedro market you will see the local people buying, selling, and enjoying the locally grown agricultural products. (We will visit the San Pedro market only on private service tours). Then we will drive south of the city to go see one on the greatest marvels of Incan hydraulic engineering, Tipon. The amazing construction of Tipon is admired by engineers, architects, and visitors from all over the world. The surrounding countryside is also very picturesque.

After enjoying Tipon, we will continue our journey of exploration at Piquillaqta. This site was once the headquarters of and an administrative center for the great pre-Incan Wari culture. The Wari Empire thrived from the 6th through the 9th century, A.D. Piquillaqta is a fine example of their planned urban engineering.

Finally we will visit the Church of St. Peter, the Apostle, located in Andahuaylillas. This colonial era church will amaze you with its murals that cover the walls and the ceiling. The art work, painted by the Cusco School of artists, is so fine that the church is called “ the Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” After our journey to the fascinating South Valley we will return to Cusco.

Day 6:Cusco – Lima (Your journey back home or on to your next destination)

Our team will drive you to Cusco’s Velasco Astete Airport in time for you to check in and catch your flight to Lima. We hope that you will carry with you fond memories of fulfilled dreams and, above all, positive energy so you will be able to continue to explore the best that our world has to offer.

If you are not yet ready to return home, our team can help you extend your stay in this magic land. There are lots more tourist attractions that you can visit in Peru, such as the Nazca Lines, Titicaca Lake, Colca Canyon, the Moche Route, and the Amazon River in Iquitos.

There is really no place in the world like Machu Picchu. It is truly other-worldly, but I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the Cusco area. The weather was great. The people were friendly. It is one of those places where we really felt appreciated as a tourists. The folks from Travel 1 were well informed, fun to be with, and very well organized. I would recommend this tour.
