With its 2000 years of history, it will amaze you. The center of colonial Lima has been declared to be part of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Its historic edifices surround the (Plaza Mayor – Plaza de Armas)
After finishing the City Tour Lima in the historic center, on our way back to your hotel we will stop at the panoramic ¨Huaca Pucllana” Pyramid. This pyramid, which was constructed in the 4th century B.C., was a magnificent ceremonial center. It is an amazing archeological feat, and it was considered to be a sacred place by the Incas.
In the afternoon if you would like to continue a deeper exploration into Peruvian culture, you could participate in an optional tour to the Larco Herrera Museum. It is considered to be the finest museum in Lima. Here you will be able to see the largest collection in the world of pre-Columbian masterpieces, and a very impressive exposition of gold and jewels, the value of which cannot be estimated.
In the morning we will eat breakfast and get ready to catch our flight to Arequipa, the White City. The city received this name because many of its buildings are made of ¨sillar¨ which is a white volcanic stone found above 2325 masl. When you arrive at the Arequipa airport our team will be waiting there to warmly welcome you and to help you get settled in your hotel. In your hotel you will find coca tea and muña tea readily available. These natural beverages will help your body to adjust to high altitude of the White City.
The weather in Arequipa is always nice. So it will be comfortable to wander around the town, morning, noon, or night. You could visit the market in the center of the city. There are some gorgeous scenic overlooks. You could walk along the narrow, pre-Columbian streets, or go out to the green fertile countryside. There are even places that give cooking classes, and where you could cook up your very own lunch or dinner.
Soon after eating a delicious breakfast we will leave the White City behind as we head out to a new adventure in the Colca Canyon. We will travel through the verdant countryside until we reach one of the deepest canyons in the world. During our journey we will pass through colorful villages that have been here for thousands of years.
Chachani is one such town that is surrounded by Andean peaks and that is full of llamas and alpacas. The blue of the sky is set off by the white of the glaciers covering the mountains. The shepherds that are watching their flocks of llamas and alpacas sing out beautiful melodies that help them pass their time out in the fields.
In the afternoon we will arrive at the town of Chivay which is very close to the canyon. That is where we will check into our hotel which is located just outside of town and which has an incredible view of the canyon. After checking in you will be able to relax and take it easy for the remainder of the afternoon. In the evening you can visit the nearby hot springs if you so choose.
The Water of Life here at the La Calera Hot Springs flows out of the Cotallumoi Volcano at 80°C. Nevertheless, it is stepped down and finally reaches the pools designated for human use at a very comfortable 38°C. The hot springs are medically significant because they contain high levels of zinc, calcium, and iron. These pools were built so that you might receive the benefits of soaking in this mineral rich environment. The waters are said to alleviate muscle pain, bone pain, and cutaneous pain, among others.
Today we will get up a little earlier than usual and have breakfast at our hotel. After breakfast we will ride to Condor Overlook (Mirador del Condor), which is on the edge of the canyon. The canyon will be spread out below you in all its glory. The condors will fly over your head. The sun will be rising over the jagged Peruvian peaks. The condors are quite used to the presence of humans.
After feasting our eyes on these amazing sights, we will continue on to the pre-Incan tombs located nearby. Then we will pass through the towns of Pinchoyllo, Maca, & Yanque. The beautiful town of Yanque has some lovely churches. The scenic overlooks of Choquetico and Antahuilque are very impressive.
After lunch here we will head out in the direction of Puno, the Capital of Peruvian Folklore. We will stop briefly along the way at Patapampa which is the highest point on our journey at 4900 masl. From that point you will have a fantastic view of the mountains to the west: Sabancaya, Ampato, Misti, and Chachani. You will also be able to appreciate the pile of stones left here by travelers and pilgrims throughout the centuries. Leaving a stone on the pile was their way of asking the deities for a safe and pleasant trip.
There will be lakes and lagoons where we can stop to see the migratory birds. Among others you will see the pretty flamingos. When we arrive in Puno, our team will help you get settled in your hotel where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest.
On this our 6th day we will go out boat riding on Lake Titicaca. We will come by and pick you up at your hotel at 7 am. We will head over to the port, board our motor launch, and ride out to the Island of Taquile. We will enjoy a 2 and a half hour tour of this island which has been ranked the 4th most beautiful island in the world. Here we will visit the isolated weavers of this ancient community. According to pre-Columbian legend, the Incas actually learned how to weave from the artisans of this island. They are very very skilled. Taquile has been declared to be part of the Cultural Heritage of the World by UNESCO.
We are going to return along the traditional route. We will leave Taquile at around noon and head in the direction of the Chucuito Peninsula. This is the Aymara region of the Lake and represents the communal identity of the Peruvian – Bolivian Altiplano. We will eat a wonderful buffet lunch in the community of Luquina Chico.
Later in the afternoon we will visit the Floating Islands of the Uros on our way back to Puno. Here the natives maintain their ancient customs and way of life by weaving together totora reeds ( which grow in the shallows of the Lake) to construct their floating island home.
This program allows our clients to visit new tourist attractions which very few vistors know about. Since this is a non-traditional tour, our clients are very satisfied. In this way you can get a good sense of the daily life of the people in rural Peru.
After eating a really good breakfast at your hotel, we will set out by bus to the cosmopolitan city of Cusco. We will travel across the Altiplano until we reach the fertile valleys of Cusco. On the journey we will stop and visit Pucara where the museum features pre-Incan sculpture and ceramics. What is specially highlighted here is the sacred bull of Pucara.
On the tour the next stop will be La Raya Pass at an elevation of 4335 masl. where the famous snow-capped peak, Chimboya, is located. We will make brief stop to take photos of the impressive scenery. When we arrive in Sicuani we will eat lunch.
In the afternoon we will be delighted by the Temple of the God Wiracocha at the Incan Archeological Complex of Raqchi. The Incas considered Wiracocha to be their Supreme God. Our adventure continues at the Temple of St. Peter, the Apostle, in Andahuaylillas. This town is pretty close to Cusco. It is considered the Sistine Chapel of the Americas. The chapel has beautiful murals in which the artists used real gold foil, and oil paintings painted by masters of the Cusco School.
