In the afternoon at 1:30 pm, your City Tour begins in the Plaza de Armas of Cusco. First you will visit the iconic Cusco Cathedral. The church contains over 400 paintings from the Cusco School of Fine Arts. Next you will visit the Incan Temple of the Sun, the Qoricancha (the Santo Domingo Church and Convent). All the walls of this temple were covered with sheets of pure gold. During Incan times this was the most important religious site in the whole Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo).
Next, we will leave the city and go up to the immense Fortress of Sacsayhuaman. This popular site was built of gigantic blocks of cut stone. Some of the blocks weigh more than 100 tons. This is one of the ancient world’s most amazing constructions. Visiting the historical site of Qenco will be your next activity. Discover here a carved limestone formation which is full of subterranean passages and decorated with mythical figures. Finally, you will go exploring the Bath of the Incas, Tambo Machay. Here you can find venders of popular arts and crafts for sale. Your entire adventure lasts 6 hours.
We’ll leave Cusco in the morning and travel to the important Incan agricultural center of Moray. Here you will see the great circular terraces where the temperature changed depending on the elevation. It is thought by historians that the Incas studied climatic conditions and soil properties here. They learned how to grow and adapt different kinds of food crops that originally grew in different regions of their empire. As you descend the terraces the temperature increases. The Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates. You will probably see farmers and shepherds in the countryside surrounding this Incan marvel.
Next, you will go visit the traditional town of Maras. There you will make a short stop to see the pretty houses which feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times. Town of Maras used to be inhabited by Incan nobility that originally lived in Cusco. They were on their way to Ollantaytambo when they settled in Maras. Today the lintel of each house shows the coat-of-arms of each family.
Finally, you will visit the salt mines of Salineras, This is an excellent site that consists of over 5000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. The Incas mined salt at this site, and salt mining continued here throughout the reign of the Spanish viceroys. Local people today let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. Then the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind a crust of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market.

Next you will visit the Pisaq Archeological Park and the famous crafts market of Pisaq in the town below. After your visit to Pisaq you will head down the Valley to Urubamba. This is where you will enjoy your delicious lunch at one of the premier restaurants in the Sacred Valley.
When lunch is finished you will continue on to the Ollantaytambo Archeological Site. I would have to admit that this has been one of my favorite tours, and I have taken tours all over the globe. Everyday was interesting and educational. What the Incas accomplished was marvelous, but I also really got a kick out of modern day Peruvians. They are able to cope with any eventuallity in good spirits and with a smile, usually a big smile, on their faces. I will be back again to delve more deeply into this wonderful place.
There is really no place in the world like Machu Picchu. It is truly other-worldly, but I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the Cusco area. The weather was great. The people were friendly. It is one of those places where we really felt appreciated as a tourists. The folks from Travel 1 were well informed, fun to be with, and very well organized. I would recommend this tour.
I reaklly enjoyed this tour. It took me below surface appearances and I learned so much. Great service too.
